Lake Kluane

The trip from Whitehorse to the Alaska border is best broken in to two days because of the road construction and frost heaves along the way.  We set out with the idea of stopping at the Cottonwood RV Park on Lake Kluane.  We stopped there years ago and loved the experience.  It was the year after Bre’s retirement and we have a great photo of him relaxing in his outdoor recliner next to the lake.
The road along the way was very beautiful.  Several of the lakes held nesting trumpeter swans, the largest of all swans.   Just 10 miles from the Haines Cutoff we encountered our most exotic animal yet, a lynx.  It lingered in the road while we stared in awe and then he moved into the brush on side of the road.  I grabbed the camera in front of me and started shooting but it had a landscape lens on and was set to F22 so all I got was a blur.  No photos but we got to see a lynx in the wild!

We passed the junction to Haines most reluctantly.  I wanted to stop to visit that beautiful and friendly town but the delays in our travel have made it not possible to stop on the way up.

Our stop for the night was the Congdon Creek Campground, a provincial campground.  It was right on Lake Kluane and has long wide sites, perfect for RVs.  Only twelve of the sites were directly on the lake and we were fortunate enough to get one of them.  Tents are not allowed because of the large number of grizzlies in the area.  It costs only $12CD a night.  There are no hookups but offer a beautiful lake, distant mountains, a flower-filled meadow and birds singing from the trees.

A camping neighbor from Delta Junction warned us about the fires between Tok and Fairbanks and the road construction ahead.

Breland split firewood with the help of his rubber mallet and we grilled pork chops and wrapped baked potatoes and frozen vegetables in foil to bake in the fire.  I will admit that I glanced over my shoulder several times as we ate to make sure a bear wasn’t coming to dinner.

Breland, It's a good thing you were chopping quietly so as not to create a ruckus and cause the bears to come see what was going on. Very nice that you cooked a meal on an open fire for your sweetheart. I am really enjoying all the pictures and narrations y'all are posting. Have fun

Thanks Eldon. It helps me enjoy the call of the wild while using my noiseless hammer to split the fire wood. The birds land near me and cheer. LOL. Having a great time.
