Valdez and a Grizzly with Four Cubs

Our original plan was to drive on to Fairbanks but the fires and heavy smoke were not inviting.  We turned toward Valdez instead.  How did I forget how breathtaking the Richardson Highway is?  Waterfalls, snowy peaks, still lakes and lots of wildlife, including moose.

There weren't many places to pull over so we pushed on to Valdez and planned tp return in the car so that we could photograph and enjoy some of the sights.

The campgrounds in the town of Valdez are crowded gravel parking lots that are very expensive. We drove to Alison Point and found a perfect spot overlooking Prince William Sound with a path down to the rocks for fishing.  We are surrounded by mountains and have a front row seat to watch the fishing fleet at work.  The site was only $15 a night, no hookups of course, but a million dollar view.

There were many, many eagles along the road and we stopped to watch a mother grizzly with her four cubs cross the wide, braided river.  Breland has nice photos of the grizzly family and I will post them soon.

Some of the fleet waiting for the twelve hour window to begin.

We are camped at Williwaw campground, by the Portage glacier, in between Seward and Anchorage. That is the wilderness area where Hale Boggs crashed, never to be found. It is a beautiful and eerie place.

Beautiful pics of great things to see. That braided river is wonderful. The eagle is fantastic and those bears... I am envious!
